Measure Task Accomplishment

Why is it useful?

This survey sees if people get their 'Job To Be Done' done. It helps identify areas where users face difficulties. By understanding task accomplishment, product managers can improve the overall user experience.

The most fundamental question in product design is whether users can accomplish their goals. Not whether they like the interface. Not whether they would recommend the product. Whether they can complete the task they set out to do.

Task accomplishment rate is the ground-level metric that everything else builds on. A user who cannot complete their task will never become satisfied, will never recommend your product, and will eventually leave. Measuring task accomplishment catches these problems before they show up in retention data.

When to deploy a task accomplishment survey

After key workflows. Trigger the survey immediately after a user completes (or abandons) a critical workflow. This includes setup flows, configuration tasks, report generation, data exports, or any multi-step process where failure is possible.

On high-traffic pages with high exit rates. If analytics show users landing on a page and leaving without taking action, a task accomplishment survey can reveal why. The page may be confusing, the next step unclear, or the content irrelevant to what they needed.

After self-service support interactions. When a user visits your help center or knowledge base, measure whether they found what they needed. Self-service that does not resolve the issue creates more work for both the customer and your support team.

During usability testing cycles. Task accomplishment surveys provide quantitative data to pair with qualitative usability observations. The combination tells you both what happened and why.

Question one gives you the headline metric. Question two reveals what users are actually trying to do, which often differs from what you designed the page or feature for. Question three is the diagnostic: it tells you exactly where the breakdown happened.

Calculating task accomplishment rate

The formula is straightforward:

Task accomplishment rate = (Number of "Yes" responses / Total responses) x 100

You can also calculate a weighted version that gives partial credit:

Weighted rate = ((Yes responses x 1) + (Partially responses x 0.5)) / Total responses x 100

Industry benchmarks vary by context. For websites, a task accomplishment rate above 80% is considered good. For complex software workflows, 70% may be acceptable during early iterations. The most useful benchmark is your own baseline tracked over time.

Analyzing task accomplishment data

Group by task type. Different tasks have different accomplishment rates. "Finding pricing information" might have a 90% rate while "configuring a custom integration" sits at 45%. Grouping by task reveals where your product works well and where it fails.

Map failure reasons to categories. Open-text responses about what prevented task completion usually cluster into a few categories: could not find the right page or feature, found it but did not understand how to use it, understood it but encountered a bug or error, completed the task but it took too long. Each category requires a different fix.

Cross-reference with user segments. New users and experienced users fail at different tasks for different reasons. New users struggle with discoverability and comprehension. Experienced users struggle with edge cases and performance. Segment your data accordingly.

Track over time after changes. When you redesign a flow or update documentation, measure task accomplishment before and after. This gives you concrete evidence of whether the change helped.

Acting on task accomplishment data

Fix discoverability first. If users cannot find the feature or page they need, nothing else matters. Navigation improvements, better search, and clearer labels have an outsized impact on task accomplishment.

Simplify multi-step processes. Tasks that require many steps have more failure points. Look for steps you can eliminate, combine, or automate. Every step removed increases the completion rate.

Add contextual help at failure points. If users consistently fail at a specific step, add inline guidance, tooltips, or examples at that exact point. Help that appears where the user is stuck is far more effective than a separate documentation page.

Close the loop on "No" responses. When a user says they could not accomplish their task, consider triggering a follow-up. Offer to connect them with support or direct them to a specific resource. This turns a failure moment into a recovery opportunity.

Common mistakes

Asking too late. Task accomplishment should be measured immediately after the attempt, not hours or days later. Delayed surveys lose the specificity of what happened and why.

Not distinguishing task types. A single aggregate task accomplishment rate masks the variation between easy and hard tasks. Always segment by what the user was trying to do.

Ignoring "Partially" responses. Users who partially accomplished their task are telling you that the product works but has friction. These are often your easiest wins because the core functionality exists but needs refinement.

Surveying on every page. Not every page visit represents a task attempt. Target the survey to pages and flows where users are actively trying to accomplish something specific. A blog post reader is not trying to "accomplish a task" in the same way a user configuring an integration is.
