Measure Search Experience

Why is it useful?

This survey measures how relevant your search results are. It helps identify areas where users face difficulties. By understanding search experience, product managers can improve the relevance of search results.

How to get started:

Search is one of the highest-intent interactions in any product. When a user types a query, they have a specific need and they expect the search to meet it. When search fails, users do not file a bug report. They get frustrated and either give up or find a workaround, and you never hear about it.

A search experience survey captures feedback immediately after a search interaction. It tells you whether users found what they were looking for, how much effort the search required, and what fell short.

When to deploy a search experience survey

After a search returns results. Trigger the survey when a user performs a search and views the results. A subtle "Did you find what you were looking for?" prompt captures satisfaction in context.

After a null-result search. When search returns zero results, the user is stuck. This is the highest-priority moment for a survey because it reveals gaps in your content, product, or search index.

After multiple search queries in a session. Repeat searches suggest the first query did not work. If a user searches three or more times in a short period, trigger a survey asking what they are trying to find.

Periodically for power users. Users who rely on search heavily have the most informed perspective on its strengths and weaknesses. Survey your most active searchers quarterly for deeper feedback.

What search survey data reveals

Content and feature gaps. "Partially" and "No" responses with open-text descriptions tell you exactly what users expect to find but cannot. These are content creation and feature development leads.

Search relevance problems. If users find results but rate relevance low, your search algorithm or indexing needs improvement. The specific queries where relevance drops point to where the search logic breaks down.

Taxonomy and naming issues. Users may search for concepts using different words than your product uses. If someone searches for "analytics" but your feature is called "insights," the search may fail despite the feature existing. Synonym mapping addresses this.

Documentation gaps. In help center or documentation search, "not found" responses directly map to articles you need to write or topics you need to cover.

Improving search based on survey data

Build a query-gap report. Compile all "what were you trying to find" responses and cross-reference them with your actual search index. Every unmatched query represents a gap. Prioritize gaps by frequency.

Add synonyms. Review failed searches for terminology mismatches. When users consistently search for something using a term that differs from your label, add that term as a synonym in your search index.

Improve result ranking. If relevance scores are low but the correct content exists, the ranking algorithm is failing. Use query-result pairs from your survey data to test and tune ranking.

Create missing content. For documentation and knowledge base search, every "could not find" response is a content request. Track the most common unfound topics and create content for them.

Common mistakes

Only monitoring search analytics. Query logs tell you what people search for. They do not tell you whether they found it or whether the results were useful. Survey data fills that gap.

Surveying on every search. Show the survey to a sample of searches, not every one. A survey appearing after every query will annoy power users who search frequently.

Ignoring null-result searches. These are the most valuable data points. Every null result means a user hit a dead end. Track null-result queries and reduce them systematically.

Not connecting search to overall satisfaction. Poor search experience degrades overall product satisfaction. If your product CSAT is declining and your search failure rate is high, the two may be connected.
