Search "Hotjar review" today and you'll land on hotjar.com, but the signup flow, pricing page, and marketing copy are all Contentsquare-branded now. Hotjar functionally merged into Contentsquare, and the product you review today isn't quite the standalone tool most reviews were written about.
This review covers what Hotjar actually is today: heatmaps, session replay, surveys, error monitoring, and an AI layer called Sense, all bundled into Contentsquare's free plan. I'll also cover where it falls short as a dedicated feedback tool, and how it compares to Formbricks, an open feedback and experience management suite.

What Is Hotjar Today
Hotjar was founded in 2014 by David Darmanin, growing into a 100% distributed team of 170 people across 33 countries, used on over 900,000 sites at its peak as an independent product. It's now positioned as "the next evolution of Hotjar", the same heatmaps, recordings, and surveys, bundled into Contentsquare's free plan with more sessions, AI-powered insights, and error monitoring.
Hotjar (now Hotjar by Contentsquare) is trusted by 3,000 enterprise and mid-market brands across 1.3+ million websites, per its own homepage.

The Merger, and Why It Matters for This Review
This is the part most "Hotjar review" searches don't account for. Hotjar.com now redirects into Contentsquare-branded signup, pricing, and marketing pages. There's no longer an independent "Hotjar" account you can sign up for separately from Contentsquare's platform.
For anyone reading older reviews of Hotjar as a lightweight, standalone heatmap tool, that's not quite the product you'll land on today. The core capabilities (heatmaps, session replay, surveys) are still there, but the buying motion, account structure, and pricing page all route through Contentsquare now.

How Hotjar Works
Heatmaps. Click, hover, and scroll heatmaps, now paired with "Attention Maps" to visualize where users focus on a page.
Session Replay. Recordings of real user sessions with automatic error and frustration signal detection.
Surveys & Feedback. On-page survey widgets and feedback templates, part of the merged Contentsquare free plan rather than a standalone survey product.
Error & Performance Monitoring. JavaScript error tracking and page-speed impact analysis, layered on top of the behavior-analytics core.
Sense AI. AI-generated summaries of heatmaps and recordings, plus a conversational "Sense Chat" for querying session data.

Where Hotjar Falls Short
Captured August 15, 2026 from hotjar.com/pricing.
No Longer an Independent Product
- New signups and pricing route through Contentsquare's platform, not a standalone Hotjar account
- This changes the buying motion for prospects who specifically want a lightweight, dedicated tool rather than an entry point into a larger enterprise platform
Surveys Are Secondary to Heatmaps and Replay
- Surveys are one feature among many in a broader behavior-analytics suite, not a dedicated in-app survey product
- Teams whose primary need is deep survey logic, targeting, or feedback workflows will find this a bolt-on rather than a core capability
No Self-Hosting or Data Residency Option
- Cloud-only, hosted on Contentsquare's infrastructure
- Disqualifying for regulated buyers needing on-premise deployment or specific data residency guarantees
Pricing Shown Only in EUR
- The pricing page displays Growth at €39/month with no USD-denominated figure on the vendor's own site
- G2's vendor-submitted pricing table separately lists "$39.00" for the same tier, an inconsistency worth noting if you're budgeting in USD
Reporting Feels Inflexible at Scale
- G2 reviewers describe filtering and reporting as inflexible for large session volumes, with performance that can feel slow on bigger datasets

What Reviewers Say
Hotjar by Contentsquare holds a 4.3 rating across 345 reviews on G2. Independent review roundups covering Hotjar specifically include Crazy Egg's Hotjar review and Venture Harbour's 9 pros and cons breakdown, both of which rank in the top 5 organic results for "hotjar review."
The consistent theme across sources: Hotjar's heatmap and session replay quality is well regarded, and the free plan is generous for a behavior-analytics tool. The recurring criticism is that deeper filtering, segmentation, and reporting require moving up the tier structure, and the free plan's "basic surveys" are exactly that, basic, compared to a dedicated survey platform.
Formbricks: A Dedicated Feedback and Experience Management Suite
Where Hotjar bundles surveys as one feature inside a much larger behavior-analytics suite (heatmaps, replay, funnels, error monitoring), Formbricks is an open source feedback and experience management suite built around three things: feedback management, feedback analytics, and workflows and integrations.
Feedback Management. Formbricks unifies website surveys, in-app surveys, link surveys, and branded email surveys as the core product, with survey logic, targeting, and branching designed for feedback collection specifically rather than as an add-on to heatmaps.
Feedback Analytics. Every response flows into one dashboard. Teams can follow individual responses, zoom out for the aggregate view, and segment by custom attributes.
Workflows and Integrations. Formbricks Workflows automate what happens after a response comes in. Native integrations connect to Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Google Sheets, and Notion through webhooks and a free, unrestricted API available on every tier, including a self-hosted Community Edition, something Hotjar doesn't offer at any price.

Feature Value Breakdown
Pricing Transparency
Hotjar's Approach: Free and Growth tiers are published (Growth in EUR only), but Pro and Enterprise require a sales call with no public pricing.
Formbricks' Approach: Every tier, including the top self-serve Scale plan, is published in USD with monthly and annual figures.
Value Verdict: Formbricks wins (brief rating: Hotjar 3/5, Formbricks 5/5). Formbricks publishes exact self-serve dollar tiers; Hotjar gates its higher tiers behind "contact sales."
Free Tier Generosity for a Dedicated Survey Use Case
Hotjar's Approach: The free plan includes "basic surveys" as one of many bundled features alongside heatmaps and replay.
Formbricks' Approach: A survey-first free tier with 250 responses/month and full API/MCP access.
Value Verdict: Roughly comparable, with a slight edge to Formbricks (brief rating: Hotjar 3/5, Formbricks 4/5) for teams whose primary need is surveys rather than heatmaps.
Self-Hosting and Data Residency
Hotjar's Approach: Cloud-only per its pricing page, hosted on Contentsquare's infrastructure.
Formbricks' Approach: A free, self-hosted Community Edition (AGPLv3) plus Formbricks Cloud hosted in Frankfurt.
Value Verdict: Formbricks wins (brief rating: Hotjar 1/5, Formbricks 5/5) for any buyer where self-hosting or data residency is a requirement.
Depth as a Dedicated Survey Tool
Hotjar's Approach: Surveys are secondary to heatmaps and session replay, per editorial review of Hotjar's own feature list.
Formbricks' Approach: Purpose-built for feedback management and experience management as the core product.
Value Verdict: Formbricks wins (brief rating: Hotjar 3/5, Formbricks 5/5) for teams that need deep survey logic, targeting, and feedback workflows rather than a bolt-on feature.
Who Should Use Hotjar
Hotjar makes sense if you want heatmaps, session replay, and surveys bundled into one behavior-analytics suite, you're comfortable being a smaller account inside a larger enterprise-focused platform now that it's part of Contentsquare, and you want a generous free session quota without needing deep survey logic.
As an illustrative example, a mid-market e-commerce team already using Hotjar's free heatmaps might add NPS surveys without leaving the dashboard, treating the basic survey templates as a convenience feature rather than shopping for a dedicated survey platform. This is a hypothetical scenario based on Hotjar's stated feature set, not a documented customer case study.
It's a weaker fit if you need a dedicated, deep in-app survey or experience management tool rather than a bolt-on feature, you require self-hosting or data residency guarantees, or you want transparent, self-serve USD pricing without a EUR-priced tier or a sales call for anything beyond entry-level.
Hotjar Review FAQ
Final Verdict
👍 Hotjar (by Contentsquare) is the right call if you want heatmaps, session replay, and basic surveys bundled into one behavior-analytics platform, with a generous free session quota and AI-powered summaries. Reviewers consistently praise its ease of setup and the clarity heatmaps bring to understanding user behavior.
👉 Formbricks is the better fit if surveys and feedback are the actual job, not a secondary feature inside a heatmap and replay suite, and you want transparent USD pricing on every tier plus a self-hosted path Hotjar doesn't offer at any price.
The honest read: these solve adjacent but different problems. If you need behavior analytics with heatmaps and replay, Hotjar (now Contentsquare) does that well. If you need a dedicated feedback management, feedback analytics, and workflows platform, see how Formbricks compares here.
